NBA (5/4/11)

Is it just me or is the NBA fun to watch again? I’m a Chicago fan so of course I’m going to think this. Never the less, I care more about the NBA Playoffs this year than any year this millennium. I completely altered my plans on Monday because I HAD to watch Game One of the Bulls/Hawks second round match up. In my mind, I HAD to. Win or lose, it was the first second round match for the Bulls since I believe the Jordan era. I’ve sat back and watched the Elton Brands, the Ron Artests, the Ben Gordons, the Captain Kirks, the Ben Wallaces, and the hand full of coaches try and fail. I’ve been a fan for the run; don’t get me confused for a bandwagon fan. It’s just there’s a new era starting and it’s looking like basketball fans are in for a huge resurgence. Being a 12 year old during the Dream Team/Jordan era was crazy. I’ll be the first to admit that I’m not and overly avid sports fan. I support the Cubs and I’ll pay half attention to the Bears, but the NBA is where my bread is buttered. It was just such a big part of my childhood that my brain is almost frozen in that time period. It’s crazy to think Shaq is the oldest player in the league. It’s crazy to think Kobe Bryant is a grizzled vet. No one from the original Dream Team is playing in the NBA and they haven’t in a good while. But now we have Derrick Rose, Rondo, Durrant, Love, Admare, John Wall, Grant, and a slew of others who are fresh and more than capable of having arenas chant their names for at least a decade to come. That’s what’s crazy. At 27 years old I find a weird sense of “old man-it is” when I watch the NBA. I’m now older than like 75% of the players in the league. I still vividly remember being a 12 year old pudgy kid in a Glen Robinson jersey. Time is a bitch. Injury or decline aside, I need to come to terms that in ten years I’m going to have graying hair and my life will be completely different. I think that’s where people who don’t like sports miss the boat. The game is a game, but its history. Our fathers and their fathers had it and our sons and their sons will have it. If the NBA continues to make generations feel old and at the same time inspire new ones then we’re in good hands. Go Bulls!
