That night I went in and after getting checked out and questioned & heckled by every guy there, and more than once being told I was too nice to be there and that girls couldn’t really do this – I stepped into the ring. The moment I stood in the ring a student bumped – THERE WAS THAT SOUND – I immediately regretted coming in. I regretted getting dressed. I regretted getting into that ring and I panicked. And for the next two hours I learned how to bump: which is quite literally correctly falling – or more correctly throwing yourself down – and every time that sound echoed in my ears. And that sound was being made by me. And my brain was confused and felt accomplished all at once.
And I wasn’t even truly bumping – the right way – at the end of it.
I woke up the next morning and felt as if I was in a car accident with a semi truck. Every inch of me ached and I had a bruise the size of ping pong paddle on my lower left back side (from the ropes – mostly)
And I wanted to quit.
What brought me back to practice on Friday? Even though I still felt awful, the aches and bruises were not ceasing…. I knew most of the boys didn’t think I could do this.
“Man up & stomach the pain” I said aloud to myself as I opened the door, and said a quick prayer in my head.
Kanye was right – That that don’t kill me, can only make me stronger.
