(FOUR) BILLY BOB THORTON
I’m going with “Santas” that have appeared after the year 2000. That’s what I mean by “modern Santa” so don’t get your panties in a bunch if I didn’t include some random Santa from some black and white movie you love so much. Chill-ax, yo. I don’t like “Bad Santa” nearly as much as much as most people. I LOVE dark comedies, but the tone is just a tad too hateful for my liking. In this one “Santa” is a horrible person that really gives you no reason at all to cheer him on. Thorton still rocks the hell out of his role though.
(THREE) ED ASNER
Ed Asner is my sleeper pick. He was the Santa in “Elf”. The movie mostly a Will Ferrell movie, but Ed does an awesome job as santa and is obviously a pivotal part in getting the story going.
(TWO) PAUL GIAMATTI
For those that haven’t seen this 2007 gem, Giamatti plays Santa in “Fred Claus”. Vince Vaughn is the star of the movie, but he plays the brother of Santa. It’s a weird dynamic and a fresh take on things and the movie is okay as well. I’m just a fan of Paul Giamatti. He brought a very awesome and respectful take to the legend and mythos that make up the character we’ve all known our whole lives. That kind of class made this movie much better than it could have been.
(ONE) TIM ALLEN
If you’d of asked me if Tim Allen would be on the one spot of any of my positive lists this year I’d of punched you where you floss. The first “Santa Clause” came out in 1994 so that’d be enough for him not be on this list, but then the sequels came in 02 and 06 so he’s on again. The first “Santa Clause” movie came out when I was 11 so of course I watched it numerous times and enjoyed it. In retrospect the movies are cheesy, lame, overly wholesome, and about two and a half installments too long. Kind of exactly like Christmas.
