(FOUR) DOWN TO EARTH
This was a weird movie, but enjoyable in retrospect. It was about Chris Rock being a standup comedian who dies and gets to come back but as an old rich white man. He still goes for his stand up career and goes after the same girl. It’s not a great movie, but its amusing stuff.
(THREE) DOGMA
Chris Rock gets to play the thirteenth apostle who is left out of the Bible because he’s black. Jesus even owes him money! It’s a really cool role in a pretty cool movie. Chris Rock owned the role and fit in with the Kevin Smith world with ease.
(TWO) HEAD OF STATE
The future was predicted here! In 2003 a movie about a black guy running for President of the United States and winning it was considered an “out there comedy”. Chris Rock was picked from the streets much like Eddie Murphy was in Trading Places. They used him and had him run in the election in some evil scheme. Historical connections aside, it’s a really underrated movie. Rock shows just the right amount of range to get the respect of an A-list leading man. Sadly, he didn’t get much more to work with.

I will forever love this movie. In 1993, I was ten years old but I still vividly remember seeing this movie at the drive in. I wondered if it was the fact that this was one of the first reaaaaally raunchy movies I remember seeing, but in recent viewings I’ve learned that it’s not the case. This movie is awesome as it was then. The soundtrack is amazing, the mockumentary, the cameos, the decent storyline hidden in the random insanity, the direction, etc etc etc. Amazing stuff. If you consider yourself a fan of comedy or Chris Rock in general and haven’t watched this movie at least three times then you’re a horrible person and I don’t trust you.
