"Top 4 Coldplay Songs"
10/18/11
BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER

(FOUR) CLOCKS
This was pretty much the band’s second big hit off their second album. I remember when it was first out there. Of course I enjoyed it because no matter how much we all want to hate Coldplay, they ARE talented musicians. I think it’s just the fact that they’re so obviously ripping Radiohead and U2 that it’s a bit disgusting. The douchey-ness makes them the English Nickelback. Songs like this suffer because of their rep.

(THREE) YELLOW
This was the song that really opened the doors for the band. When you listen to it now, it sorta sucks. It sounds like a million bands and light rock tunes. The thing is that those million bands came AFTER. The simplistic success of a song with a simple vocal range and down tempo piano was really kind of brought back here. The song was all groundbreaking and shit when it came out, but the new car smell would fade with each dozen plays this song got.

(TWO) THE SCIENTIST
The video is trippy and surreal as hell, but all that’s weird about it is that the video is backwards. The way it was done and presented was just really awesome. This made the song even better. The piano is very good and Chris Martin’s vocals are his best. I can accept hating on Coldplay, but hating on this song for any other reason than over exposure is bullshit. It really IS a good song.

(ONE) VIOLET HILL
This is my favorite Coldplay track by far. I enjoy the drum rhythm and the protest content is well written. The video is also really cool. I love the way it’s shot and how it looks. I’m quick to dismiss Coldplay as crap and I’d be normally right. This track is different though. Instead of ripping off U2 a little, they do just about completely. They literally made a “Joshua Tree” B-Side. I can’t be mad at that… when it’s done right.
