4 Bands You Should Already Know V.11
11/22/11
BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER

(FOUR) LENNY KRAVITZ
I don’t know why Lenny doesn’t have a higher status in the rock world. He clearly rocks at what he does and embodies what the term “rockstar” used to. He’s a throwback, sure, but he’s still good at what he does. His hits in the 90’s like “Fly Away”, “American Woman”, “Let Love Rule”, and “Are You Gonna Go My Way” were huge. His more recent stuff isn’t as commercial, but I’m sure there is some gems hidden in there.

(THREE) THE FLAMING LIPS
I’m not going to lie. I’m not a HUGE fan of The Flaming Lips. I’ve enjoyed bits and pieces of their music over the years, but what I like about them is just the off the wall art-school nonsense they continue to display. From what I’ve seen, their live shows are ah-crazy-mazing. Even if I don’t want to take the time to get into their music, I can still appreciate their eccentric approach.

(TWO) THE BLACK CROWES
If you listen to only ONE song by The Black Crowes then you’ll want to listen to “Hard to Handle”. That shit was awesome. This band was awesome. The lead singer was married to Kate Hudson. They’re old school hippies but groomed in the era of grunge. They had other songs too… for sure. They’ve been around for like a million years. You don’t get the pleasure of having longevity in something without putting out some quality work at least every so often. I’m willing to bet if I sat down with their music for awhile I’d probably become a huge fan. There’s just so much.

(ONE) SLIPKNOT
I’m not stuck in the late 90’s/early 00’s at all. If you’re sticking your nose up to Slipknot for ANY reason then you’re a douche. Their costumes are cool and different. Their music is hard, melody, well crafted, and Cory’s vocals are probably the best in metal music today. People automatically think crazy mosh pits and dirty people in Slipknot shirts, but the stereotype isn’t fair. Well, at least with Slipknot. “Wait and Bleed” and a good chunk of their last album or so is much more accessible, but those other early tracks are killer. Slipknot had that potential to really shake things up and be THE metal band, but for some reason just never really got over that final hurdle. I know they’re on hiatus now, but I think in time they could still do it.
