Top 4 Recent SNL Casted Films
12/23/11

(FOUR) MACGRUBER
Here’s the deal. I’m going for recent comedies that feature at least two recent SNL castmembers. By recent I’m going back like five or six years. Basically, the tail end of the Fallon/Fey era. Cool? Cool. There have been more “multi-casted” movies than you’d think. I think Nick and Norah had a few, Spring Breakdown, and a few others aren’t included here. I had to include this one. This movie isn’t as loved as it should be. This movie stars Will Forte with heavy support from Kristen Wiig and Maya Rudolph. It’s the only movie on this last that’s from an actual sketch on SNL. The sketch is a parody of MacGyver and the movie takes it one step farther into a full on satire on old shitty action movies. I don’t know many people who had actually watched it, so I don’t think it’s considered “bad”. I just don’t think people are giving this movie a chance.

(THREE) THE BROTHERS SOLOMON
This movie costars Will Forte and has appearances by Kristen Wiig and Bill Hader. I don’t get it. This movie “bombed” at the box office. It made back like a tenth of it’s 10 million dollar budget. Richard Roeper even walked out of this movie, the first movie ever! Am I missing something? Sure it’s not the best movie ever, but it’s a fun movie! It’s got a very distinct dry and awkward humor to it. It’s cheesy to the point of it being ironic. I just don’t think people “get it”. Isn’t that what you say when you like something that everyone else hates?

(TWO) BABY MAMA
Now we get Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as the leads. The supporting cast sees both Will Forte and Fred Armisen. On top of that we have Steve Martin, who might as well have a statue in front of 30 Rock. The movie was a success overall. I expected it to big a bigger release and I’m sure I’m not a lone, but it’s not like it’s not in the rotation of basic cable comedies that’ll be played over and over again for the next twenty years.

(ONE) HOT ROD
I can say this without any hesitation or irony. Hot Rod is one of my favorite comedies of all time. I don’t get how ANYONE can hate this movie. We have Any Samberg as Rod, a local stunt man. Bill Hader plays his friend, SNL writer and sometimes appearer Jorma Taccone is his brother, Chris Parnell plays a radio host, and SNL and comedy icon Will Ferrell produces. The non-SNL folk are just as awesome in Danny McBride, Will Arnett, Isla Fisher, IAN MCSHANE, Sissy Spacek, and others. This movie is vulgar, silly, over the top, and just one of the funniest and most entertaining movies to come out in a long time. To me it’s up there with the classics.
