4 Ideal Weekend Update Hosts
07/21/12
BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER

(FOUR) MIKE O’BRIEN
Seth Meyers was rumored to leave going into the 2012/13 SNL season. He was supposedly going to take Regis’s spot on “Live with Some Dude and Kelly!”, but he’s sticking with SNL. I think there is probably a better gig out there for Meyers, but in the meantime we get at least one more year. But after that we need a great host… I like Mike O’Brien. He’s a writer on the show and has these really weird webisodes where he and a celebrity get into a closet together for an interview. It’s awkward, weird, and hilarious. The ICP one was specifically awesome. He should just be on the show in general. These segments could have been Digital Shorts or its own equivalent.

(THREE) VANESSA BAYER
Bayer joined SNL in 2010. She is now one of the best performers on the show. She has done a great job in all of her supporting characters and has shined in her starring roles. She has great timing and does great impressions. In a lot of cases, the Weekend Update host will end up sticking specifically to the desk but I think if she had a co-anchor she’d be able to do it all. Amy Poehler anchored and still had sketch time. I’d like to see Bayer go more that route.

(TWO) JAY PHAROAH
Jay’s celebrity impersonations are top notch. I’d like to see his character voices have more of caricature style, but he continues to improve and make his place. I think it would be really interesting to see Jay handle the Weekend Update. If his voice impersonations are tied in-to it could be really entertaining.

(ONE) JOHN MULANEY
This one seems the most logical. He is one of the few non-SNL cast members or special guests to appear on the show for segments on Weekend Update in a looooong time. He’s already one of the main writers on the show and is building his own “street cred” with his awesome stand up specials and spots. He would be a perfect pick for this spot, but if too much time passes his stand up work might eclipse it.
