(FOUR) EVIL DEAD
When I first heard about the remake of Evil Dead I was kind of pissed. Evil Dead is the epitome of a “D-I-Y” movie gone good. It was such a great story with great and iconic results. This is a movie that opened the careers of the Ramis and Bruce Campbell up to the world and made a lot of aspiring filmmaking nerds feel like anything was possible. Why remake it? Because EVERYTHING gets remade, that’s why. I was turned off by this until I saw the trailer. This trailer looks way more serious than the original and way more graphic. They got a solid young cast and I’m actually confident and excited after seeing this trailer. The trailer is uncomfortable, violent, gets in a few of the familiar beats, and seems like something completely different. I expect to watch this movie, smile at certain familiar things, frown at things being changed, and before it’s over forget I’m watching a remake. If this can somehow re-introduce “the boom stick” back into the world then I’m all about it.

(THREE) MAN OF STEEL
I never saw the Superman reboot from a few years ago. I don’t know why I didn’t, but I just never did. I’ll watch it someday, but most likely after I watch this new rendition. Zack Snyder is an awesome director and I can’t wait to see his vision of this world come to life. Henry Cavill seems to be a perfect “young Superman” and then the cast is stacked with Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane, Laurence Fishburn, Russell Crowe, and Christopher Meloni to name a few. This will be another origin story but I think we’re due a good Superman origin story. We get to see Superman take form and fight off General Zod. I don’t know what else we’d need in a movie like this. It’s obviously the start of a new franchise so I guess we gotta start off somewhere. This should be a good start..er.. re-re-re-start.

(TWO) STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS
The awkward nerds and William Shatner’s weird acting forced me away from the world that is Star Trek. I’m a nerdy guy, but this is one area of the nerdom that I just never got into. The old show seemed hokey and cheesy and the “Next Generation” stuff was just too over my head to casually watch. Star Trek is a franchise you need to fully get into to really be a fan. I just never had the interest in it. A few years ago JJ Abrams put out the Star Trek movie and that all changed. I’m still not going to dig into the old school stuff, but I really dug the first movie. The action and story was entertaining, interesting, and well done. I got to get a full dose of the characters I’ve always “kinda knew” in a much more accessible way. The cast was awesome. This time the same cast comes back and we get more of the story. This will be the second Star Trek movie that I watch. I’m excited.

(ONE) IRON MAN 3
I was never an Iron Man fan growing up. I would get into certain comics, but that phase in my childhood passed rather quickly. Then a few years ago the first Iron Man movie came out and I was hooked. Jon Favreau did a great job with the first two movies and made me care about a superhero I pretty much knew nothing about. Robert Downey Jr. is talented and did a good job with the character, but the world built around him had to work for the movie to work. It more than worked. The first Iron Man movie is one of the best superhero movies from the past ten years which says a lot considered 5 out of 3 new movies released are superhero movies. In the third movie Shane Black is taking the helm of director and writer and the cast sees the awesome Guy Pearce and Ben Kingsley added. The trailer looks awesome. Tony Stark sees all of his toys and riches destroyed and is forced to start from scratch and fight on his own. The whole battle of “does the suit make the man or does the man make the suit” is interesting and should make for a solid third in this series.
