Top 4 Anticipated Comedies Summer ‘13

(FOUR) THE HEAT
This movie looks decent enough. The comedy pool this summer is kind of shallow. This looks better than Grown Ups 2, if that counts for anything. Sandra Bullock is someone I find charming, but I can’t remember the last movie I saw her in that I enjoyed. To be honest, I can’t even remember the last Sandra Bullock movie that I actually sat down and watched. Melissa McCarthy is really coming into her own. She’s getting cool roles and is getting a chance to shine as one of the “it girls” in comedy right now. I’m really interested to see how their chemistry is. It could be something really cool. Sadly, these kinds of comedy cop movies seem to have lame and predictable plots. If the story doesn’t suck, this movie could be a sleeper this summer.

(THREE) GIRL MOST LIKELY
I heart dark comedies. This one seems pretty dark and it stars Kristen Wiig so it’s a double trouble of fun. The story is that Wiig plays a woman who stages a suicide attempt to win back her ex but instead gets stuck living with her crazy mother played by Annette Benning. It sounds like a lot of dark and morbid fun. I’m not sure if they’ll even have a wide release for this, but I’ll see it as soon as possible. It seems really engaging and I’m exciting to see Kristen Wiig in a role like this. This is one of those movies that doesn’t get a lot of attention, but eventually builds via word of mouth or secondary market like Netflix or cable.

(TWO) THE WORLD’S END
Yes please! The trilogy is finally getting to finish up. Over the past decade or so director Edgar Wright and actors Simon Pegg and Nick Frost have worked together on some of the best British comedies to come out in years. “Shaun of the Dead” is fantastic and “Hot Fuzz” is underrated. The idea seems really fun. It’s about a group of friends who get back together after years of being apart. They celebrate their reunion with a pub crawl that’s supposed to end at some magical and amazing pub called “The World’s End”. They soon find out the world IS going to end. And hilarity ensues. This movie has been talked about for years now. You know Wright, Pegg, and Frost have put the time in on this one and wouldn’t put it out there unless they were for sure it was good. I hope I’m not wrong, but I totally trust these guys.

(ONE) WE’RE THE MILLERS
This movie is going to be good. Jason Sudeikis plays a small time weed dealer who hires a phony family to be decoys in his attempt to mule TWO TONS of weed from Mexico to Colorado. He hires Jennifer Aniston, a stripper!, Emma Roberts, a homeless teen, and a nerdy British kid to be his son. On top of that, Ed Helms, Nick Offerman, Thomas Lennon, Kathryn Hahn, and other cool people apparently show up. So what I gather is that this is a dysfunctional road trip movie based around two tons of weed… and Jennifer Aniston is a stripper. What did you not get about this movie? It’s going to be really hard for them to make this movie not at least “enjoyable.” This could be Sudeikis’s big movie and step towards being a solid leading actor. Fingers crossed on all possibilities.
