(FOUR) THE DEVIL’S RAPTURE
This movie is going to be a guilty pleasure. It’s a small village where they are a really tight religious community. Six girls are born on the same day and on their 18th Birthdays they all start going missing. They tease it as being supernatural related, occult related, and just being screwed up. I recently saw Rob Zombie’s “Salem” and it was really good and VERY well done. I doubt the substance of that movie will be here, but I have a feeling the action and jump moments will be bigger. I’m a big fan of Jennifer Carpenter. She is awesome on Dexter, but I’ve enjoyed seeing her in other things. She’s seemingly perfect for horror movies and things like that. He just has a strong knack at emoting a “holy shit!” freak out vibe and at the same time “holy shit! Now I’m going to fuck shit up!” vibe is there too. It’s a great balance. The rest of the cast is pretty interesting too. Lots of familiar faces. But let’s not “get it twisted” as the kids say, I’m there for Jennifer Carpenter.

(THREE) HOMEFRONT
This movie just looks like a lot of fun. It looks like one of those old throw back 80’s action movies. Somewhere in the area of Van Damm, Arnold, or Chuck Norris. The one guy that I think actually carries this tradition properly is Jason Statham. Crank and Crank 2 are awesome movies. Statham IS the current action star, it’s just that kind of action movie isn’t as popular as it used to be. Regardless, these movies are fun. He is a low level DEA agent who gets mixed up with an evil meth kingpin played by James Franco! Yes, James Franco! I think he’s trying to take over the roles that Dennis Hopper would take. He’s everywhere and in everything. No genre or medium is safe. The idea that he’s playing the over the top bad guy to fight Statham is really entertaining. Then the cast is rounded out by Winona Ryder, Kate Bosworth, Mishca Barton, and Vincent D’Onofrio. That’s a really solid cast for a silly action movie so it makes me automatically think there’s going to be more this movie. I’m for the fun, but there is a chance this could be pretty damn surprising.

(TWO) GRAVITY
Sandra Bullock has been in a lot of things lately. At least, she’s starting to be in a lot of things that I’m noticing. It seems like she’s on an upswing and I’m all for it. I’m not a George Clooney fan. He just seems really dry and his performances are rarely outside of the same range. It’s either suit and tie American dream business man or not funny zany and silly. In this movie he plays an astronaut. While not in a business suit, he’s in a space suit. So I expect that kind of “charm” in between the crazy action scenes. That’s what I’m most curious about. The idea of playing with space in such a dark and cavernous way is freaky and interesting as hell. The idea is that these two are astronauts who get stuck in space after a horrible equipment accident. I don’t think anyone doesn’t have a nervous fear about being stuck in the dark with no end in sight. THAT is what’s going on here. It’s SPACE! Do they overcome? Do they die in space? Does it get bat shit crazy and involve aliens? Who knows! Let’s watch it and find out!

(ONE) CARRIE
This movie has to be awesome. I never thought I’d be so enthusiastic about a remake of a horror movie, but this one just falls into place for me. I always liked the original, but it was never my favorite. The tone, the direction, and the story was cool but the performances didn’t connect with me. Maybe it was just a “different era” thing, because I generally like the stars of the original. This movie has people in it that I’m already a big fan of. Chloe Grace Moretz is quickly becoming the coolest young actress out there right now. She keeps taking on awesome roles and looks to be having a blast with it. Then on top of that, Julianne Moore and Judy Greer! Two of the best actresses out there today. The tone seems to be “dark” for today’s standards and it should be a pretty fun movie. I wonder if they throw in new twists or if they stay true to the original. Either way, I’m in!
