"Top 4 David Duchovny Roles"
10/18/10
BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER

(FOUR) IRA KANE
(“Evolution”)There’s a lot of stuff I could of put in this forth spot. His lineage of work is pretty varied and entertaining. He rocked in “Kalifornia”, “Zoolander”, “House of D”, “The Joneses”, and pretty much anything and everything else he put out there. I go with the 2001 sci-fi comedy starring Duchovny, Orlando Jones, Sean William Scott, and Julianne Moore. I thought this movie was massively underrated. Ivan Reitman is popular for his Ghostbuster work and this may be a little “too close for comfort”, but that’s no fault of the cast or writers. The story was fun, the dialogue sharp, and the acting great. It was like seeing David Duchovny play the Murray and the Ackyroyd roles by himself… and perfectly. This movie is a victim of being a wrong place at the wrong time.

(THREE) HIMSELF
(“The Larry Sanders Show”)Around the time he was on Larry, he was just breaking out. He had appeared in a few smaller parts, but X-Files was the big thing at the time and put the dude on the map. He appeared on Larry Sanders probably close to half a dozen times. Each time he’d show up there’d be questions about his sexuality as he become a little too close to Larry. It doesn’t sound like much, but he added a lot to the show when he was on. I think his natural charm and swagger was on display here and was probably a predecessor of his Californication show. Whatever it was, was enough for him to get an Emmy nomination for guest actor in a comedy in 1997.

(TWO) FOX MULDER
(“The X Files”)For like a million years, Fox’s big show was “The X-Files”. I won’t pretend I watched much of it. It just wasn’t my cup of tea at the time, but not a show I’d rule checking out again in the future. From what I gather Duchovny’s Mulder character is a “believer” in the paranormal stuff they investigated. Still, I’d be a jerk if I didn’t include this in here somewhere. Without this role there is a good chance that I may not have heard of the guy.

(ONE) HANK MOODY
(“Californication”)My favorite David Duchovny role is by far that of the self destructive charmer Hank Moody. Californication is one of the most underrated shows of all time and Duchovny’s performance as Hank is Emmy worthy to the max. He plays a writer who lives his life like a rockstar while trying to balance a relationship with his on again/off again love and his daughter. The personality, style, swagger, and delivery here makes it hard to believe Duchovny being much different than the character himself. Either he’s found the perfect role or he’s a great actor. Shit. Probably both.
