Mr. Popper's Penguins

BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER

I am a huge fan of Jim Carrey. His early comedies were great. They were over the top and abrasive, but for a pre-teenage boy they were GREAT. As his career matured I lost some love. Around time of “Liar, Liar” I started to lost interest. “Man On The Moon” was the first one, but then he popped up with “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind” and to a lesser extent “The Number 23”. Jim Carrey’s dramatic side is great. The family comedies are hit and miss with me. As cheesy and hokey as a movie can be, he’ll come in and put on a great performance. I liked him in “Lemony Snicket”, “Cat In The Hat”, and pretty much everything. I’m a 27 year old dude with no kids. Unless I get really really stoned or drunk I’m clearly not the demographic for these movies. In turn, I might watch these movies once, enjoy them, and then never again. It’s those old rewatchable comedies from when I was a kid, the vulgar ones, that I want. I want to see Jim Carrey do some R-rated comedies and some more drama. He’s a great actor and I’m pretty sure the demographic I’m actually in would love to see Jim go apeshit again. Sadly, in this movie Jim Carrey doesn’t go apeshit, but rather penguin shit. The only thing that’s interesting to me about this movie is that it was produced by National Geographic Films. I didn’t know they made movies. It’s about a man who inherits six penguins. Hilarity and awe-shuck moments ensue. I’m not a monster. Of course I think penguins are cute. I just don’t see myself caring enough for an hour and a half. The issue here is that I do love me some Jim Carrey so I’m split on it. I know I’m not going to ever pay to see this movie. I’ll watch it on cable or DVD. C’mon Jim.
