Friends With Benefits

BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER

It doesn’t seem like a movie I’d want to see. It looks as paint-by-numbers as an “edgy” rom com can be. The problem with that theory is that it’s probably going to be really good. The cast is awesome and its R rated. That’s normally enough for me to watch any comedy and this one won’t be any different. Justin Timberlake has been earning his acting stripes like a mad man. He rocks on SNL, he rocks in “Social Network”, I liked him in “Bad Teacher”, and he was really underrated in both “Alpha Dog” AND “Southland Tales”. He’s not afraid to make a fool of himself and has a good sense of humor. Now he’s getting a lead role in a comedy? Color me interested! I’d not be that excited if his costar sucked. I wouldn’t want to see a Megan Fox or a Katherine Heigel and we don’t. Instead JT’s costar is Mila FN’ Kunis! She’s awesome and is coming into her own as well. The supporting cast has Patricia Clarkson, Richard Jenkins, and Woody Harrelson. Coolness. The plot seems a little boring though. It’s going to go two ways. They’re “friends with benefits”, so they hook up occasionally and don’t get into anything serious. They can go with the “but I REALLY do love him/her” plot or the “we ARE better friends than lovers”. I hope I’m wrong, but I doubt I will be. I’m willing to bet there will be some really funny lines, some funny scenarios, and really a funny movie. I’m not expecting too much, but I’ll watch this one when I get a chance. The ingredients are definitely there, but on paper the plot is pretty thin and done. Never the less, I’m going to be optimistic…
