The Descendants

BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER

I am not a fan of George Clooney. I think he’s REALLY overrated as an actor. He might be an awesome guy, but if we all can’t admit that Clooney coasts on his looks and status then we’re being a bit delusional. He’s ALWAYS wearing suits and doing something corporate or spy-like. He wears more suits in movies than the people who sell them. It’s the same crap. It’s Oscar-feeder than wannabe-literate wet blankets watch and swoon over. He works with the Cohens a lot… so what? They rock and he doesn’t. Deal with it. His shit comes off a bit too “swaggery”. Like you’d expect a character with a martini glass to roam in the scene and pretentiously laugh. I know I’m pretty much a lone in this because it seems like everyone LOVES this guy. I don’t hate him or anything, but I just don’t think he’s worth the acclaim or hoopla.

My strong opinions aside, I will see this movie and I’m looking forward to it. Alexander Payne makes great movies. He’s one of those directors that if you really appreciate film that you MUST see what he’s up to. The plot to this one seems pretty interesting. Clooney’s wife is in a coma and he has to pull the plug. It doesn’t JUST end there though. Before this can happen he finds out that his wife was cheating on him. He is faced with confronting this man, his wife, and all while coping on his own and being strong for his two daughters. Crazy. I enjoy “human nature” type of movies that dig deep into people put in certain situations. This is definitely one of those situations that you want to see unfold. I’m optimistic I’ll love Clooney, but the rest of the cast looks really strong. We get Judy Greer, Matthew Lillard, Beau Bridges, Rob Huebel, and a few other familiar faces. This movie is going to get a lot of attention because of the ingredients included. Clooney in an Alexander Payne movie is going to sell tickets. Clooney’s normal crowd will be in tow as well as the more independent lovers of Payne. I can’t see how this movie won’t be AT LEAST decent.
