"The visuals were amazing" is the most common thing I've heard for the past few weeks about this movie. I've heard some say it was "great" and even some say "greatest movie EVER". The visuals ARE amazing. It's like one of those story-line videos between levels on a PSone game, but done on a Hollywood budget. Really, folks, it's "theme park cinema". People buy their IMAX tickets just as they would for a roller coaster. It's a cheap disposable thrill. The visual experience brings you in and for most people holds their attention, but not me. Once I got past the awe of the look of the movie, I realized that the story was lame. It's your basic "Pilgrims stealing from the Native American" story, but with a sci-fi twist. In 10 years, I have a feeling that no one will remember the characters or really even the story. It'll be a milestone footnote because of the budget and the massive CGI orgy that it is. I find myself completely shocked that people LOVED this movie. It's pretty damn nice looking, but there is no real emotion or substance. It's basically "Twilight" for everyone else. It's all sizzle and no steak. The sizzle is outstanding, but if you can pull your brain away from that you'll be in for a huge disappointment. My suggestion is that if you do see this movie to shut your brain off completely. Have no standards. Have no desire to see a good story. Do NOT let your brain wander to something of meaning. You'll be let down. Honestly, I'm NOT a hater. When I sit down with a two and a half hour long movie I sure as fuck WANT to enjoy it. I want my time to not be wasted and I want to take something from the experience. What I ended up taking from this movie is that people love their shiny objects and want you to validate that love by telling you how this movie is great.
