"BURN AFTER READING"
11/12/08
BY MIKEY MIGO

I have been a fan of the Coen brothers' movies since "Raising Arizona" from when I was a young kid. Then I discovered "The Big Lebowski" and was set for life. That movie is one of the best movies of the past quarter century and to argue that fact would only prove you to be very "undude". There's been a few that I didn't like as much as others. I never really dug "O, Brother" or "Intolerable Cruelty" and while I liked it, I don't find "No Country For Old Men" to have much "rewatchablity". I recall being really annoyed with the trailer for "Burn After Reading". It seemed like one of the same "pseudo-smart/ martini and giggles" comedies that Clooney and the gang seem to always be involved with. This movie just sorta felt like "Fargo Lebowski" minus the heart and likeability of the cast. Clooney's work in the movie is probably up there with my favorite of his, but I've never really been able to connect with any of his characters so it's not a fair assessment. Everyone just sorta seems there. Tilda Swinton and MrDormand are great actresses, but they just seemed really one dimensional. Malkovich and Pitt save the movie for me. The plot of wanting to sell an assumed disc full of CIA secrets (really just Malkovich's memoirs) so McDormand can get cosmetic surgery was "eh". I kept waiting for the plot to thicken and to capture my imagination, but the end result was typical fare. It's not that I don't like the movie. It was well done, but I just think I was hoping for something more. It's a movie with drawn out subplots that all get tied together with a pretty red bow at the very end. I'll probably watch this one again a few months or even years down the line. If my opinion doesn't change after that then it'll be my last viewing of this movie.
