There has been a lot of hoopla over Pink’s latest single and its video. The song is called “Fu*kin’ Perfect”, so off the bat the F-word is used and that makes it “vulgar”. The song is the typical Pink stuff. It’s about girls needing to love themselves and all that. I agree and all, but creating the subgenre of emo-R&B isn’t the answer. I like Pink. I listened to her entire studio album discography. She can put out some really good stuff and has a great voice, but it’s predictable pseudo-rebellion and the same lyrics over and over that bore the shit out of me. The video looks good and is well done. Tina Majorino is awesome. She’s an underrated actress and I’m happy to see her in something that’s getting so much attention for whatever reason. She has sex and then reflects on being a little girl. It’s a lot of overly dramatic scenes of girls being misunderstood. Then it shows serious stuff with a girl cutting in the bath tub and killing herself… or not! No! She wakes up… she cuts her hair short… like Pink…. And is now “perfect”. In fact, she’s a “perfect mom”! The imagery of the cutting and blood was “controversial” when Marilyn Manson did it in the Saint video. I’m not dumb. I know it’s out there and kids know about it, but I can’t help but wonder how many little girls are going to see what “cutting” is for the first time by watching this video and then in turn do it for attention. Or it’s very possible someone could take the video the wrong way and think “hey, that girl hated herself until she cut the word “perfect” into her arm and then she became happy”. This song feels like a cross between a country song and an afterschool special. This video is like a really serious episode of Reba. I’m on Pink’s side with things, but her execution sucks. Lame sauce. Little girls need better role models than cliché filled drama pop.
