This clip from a CZW wrestling match has been making its rounds online. CZW is an independent wrestling company that runs out of the east coast. They’ve gotten their name and brand out there fairly well for an indie fed and has been around for awhile. Most people instantly thing “hardcore” or “garbage wrestling” when thinking about CZW, but they’ve evolved. They’re not JUST “hardcore” or “garbage wrestling” and they put out some good wrestling matches. They cover everything now. They get hardcore still, but they have high flyers, technical wrestlers, and the normal variety a successful wrestling show would have. They also do comedy, which is where this clip comes into effect…
It’s a joke. “The Osirian Portal” used their “snake charming powers” to control their opponents, “The Runaways”. It’s HILARIOUS. It’s part of the match to entertain and if you ask me, it certainly does. Yet, some people are up in arms about it. I’ve seen people complain that it’s a “slap in the face to wrestling” and that it is “insulting!” or “it disrespect real wrestlers.” Calm down, kiddies. I’m not going to use the word “fake”, but professional wrestling is a form of athletic entertainment. That’s just how it goes. Not everything in wrestling needs to be vanilla vs. vanilla. Not everything needs to be Ric Flair vs. Steamboat. We don’t need to have Hogan or Austin’s over the top promos. Sometimes all you need are dudes in snake costumes making someone dance.
Was it cheesy or unfunny? That’s subjective and opinion. Was it an “insult to wrestling” or a “disgrace”… NO! We’re supposed to be okay with Undertaker being dead, making lightning strike, and getting his power from an urn? We’re supposed to be okay with Kane lighting his family on fire as a child? We’re good with horrible impact moves like “The worm”, “The People’s Elbow”, “Hogan’s Leg Drop”, or Santino’s “cobra strike” being finishing moves? There is a history of the bizarre and ridiculous that is just as much a part of what professional wrestling as a good mat wrestling classic. It can be a great art in moments, but in the end its professional wrestling, don’t take it so serious.
