Wrestlemania 27 (Preview)
03.29.11
BY MIKEY MIGO

I’ve not been this excited about Wrestlemania since I was able to go to Detroit for 23. Hell, to be honest I don’t even think I was THIS into wrestling as I was then. Wrestling has always worked in cycles in business. Sometimes it’s big business and sometimes not so much. I suppose even the biggest of wrestling fans will also experience some sort of cycle. I’ve gone through my phase of not caring over the past year or so, but in the past month or so I’ve been slowly drawn back in. I’m watching weekly, watching Smackdown online, even watching the occasional Superstar match, and just doing the mark out thing. That said, I’m not going to ramble too much about my own personal ties into wrestling. I’m going to just cut it dry and give my Wrestlemania predictions and thoughts.

I appreciate the build this year. There are some midcard storylines that are just fun and good. Orton and Punk is turning out to be decent. It’s like the 5th or 6th important match on the show and it’s STILL being pushed on the equivalent of a midsummer PPV main event. I’m not huge on Rey, but I appreciate the fact he’s allowing himself to give Cody a much needed rub. Sheamus and Daniel Bryan haven’t had a really deep rooted story, but it’s a legit back and forth feud. I like their work together and look forward to them both on the big stage. I wish Kofi was getting a rematch for his IC Title against Barrett. The 8-Man Tag idea sucks. It might be okay when it plays out, but on paper it sounds like a sure shot piss break. I do wish Morrison and Ziggles was a straight one on one match, but I can accept it not being because they’re getting a slight publicity rub from Snooki’s involvement. Cole and Lawler is going to be lame and I just hope it takes Cole off camera for… well, forever. Whatever about Triple H and Taker. They’re already setting up NEXT year’s rematch. I can see it now. Taker starts to lose a step and Triple H comes out and references this past Pre-Mania RAW about Taker saying he’d want Triple H to be the one to “take him out”. Mark my works on this one. The match will be okay. Taker can barely move and Triple H is at the point where unless he’s carried he’s boring. I’m sure Michaels will interview or be involved, which rubs me the wrong way. I want him to stay retired. He was my favorite of all time, but stick with it. Albert Del Rio and Edge is cool with me. At first I was hesitant of Del Rio thinking he should have a solid US Title run or IC Title run before taking a big pushed leap. I’m starting to see why they’re taking such a huge chance with him getting a Main Event match at Mania. In the recent year or two they’ve pushed Swagger, Sheamus, Barrett, and others into the Main Event spots but there is a difference between them and Del Rio. They look the part and are given a fair rub, but they have a sense of insecurity or green-ness in their eyes that you just have to grow out of. Del Rio carries himself like a Main Event wrestler and isn’t bad in the ring. Still, it might be early but if he continues to back it up he’ll have no problem making us forget he’s not even been around a year yet. And finally Miz and Cena. I don’t care for either of them, but I think Cena might actually lose. Of course, his loss will be due to the Rock because they’ll neeeeever let Cena lose cleanly at Mania. Dear god no!

The predictions are easy. When in doubt pick the face. My picks are in bold The 8-Man Tag is pointless and there are no titles on the line. Big Show, Kane, Santino & Vladimir Kozlov win and I’d be shocked if Barrett took the pin. Same can be said for the Ziggles/LayCool versus Morrison/Trish/Snooki match. It’s a pointless match and the faces will win. Cody Rhodes would have much more to gain by beating Rey Mysterio. I’ll be surprised if Rey lost, but I’m still going with Cody Rhodes. Jerry Lawler over Cole. It’s going to be the big pay off revenge spot. Sheamus is going to retain his belt over Daniel Bryan. I’d love to see it be different, but as long as they get at least ten minutes to kick ass then no one is the loser. I think they’ll pull the trigger on CM Punk and have him get the win over Orton. My gut wants to say Orton wins because he’s a face, but they can’t have ALL faces win. Here’s the balance match. Speaking of balance, which is the very reason why I think Taker and Triple H will go on at the end. No one is going to want to follow whatever surely overrated match they have so they’ll go on last. The Undertaker will get the win after an “epic match” and send the crowd home happy. This will balance out the little kids in the crowd weeping as their heroes fall. I say this because I think this year we’ll see BOTH Titles with heels at the end of the night. Del Rio will get the win over Edge and then go on to have a Three Way Feud with Christian. Then I can also see Miz retaining his belt over Cena when the Rock gets involved. It makes me want to punch a baby knowing that The Rock’s comeback has the main purpose of making sure John Cena doesn’t lose clean at Wrestlemania. I hope I’m wrong, but it’s WWE so I doubt it.
