I saw the two minute trailer for the new Beastie Boys short film/video thing. It had me hooked with the couple of cameos and the fact that it had Will Ferrell, Seth Rogen, Danny McBride, Elijah Wood, and others in it. I’m a huge fan of the Beasties and a huge fan of a lot of the people I saw crammed into the little two minute trailer. Then I actually got to see this 20-something minute long masterpiece. It’s basically a surreal take on the Beastie Boy’s biggest hit “Fight For Your Right” only twenty five years layer. We have three young Beasties going around, drinking, causing ruckus, and having a good ol’ time. They encounter TONS of celebrities and all is well. By tons I mean they get cameos from about a million different awesome people. I’ve watched it the one time SO FAR and I can honestly say I didn’t pick up on EVERYONE in this featurette. The credited cast includes Elijah Wood, Danny McBride, Seth Rogen, Susan Surandon, Stanley Tucci, Rashida Jones, Will Arnett, Adam Scott, Mike Mills, Rainn Wilson, Ted Danson, Shannyn Sossamon, Steve Buscemi, Amy Poehler, Mary Steenburgen, Alicia Silverstone, Laura Dern, Milo Ventimiglia, Jody Hill, Jason Schwartzman, Chloe Sevigny, Kirsten Dunst, Maya Rudolph, David Cross, Orlando Bloom, Will Ferrell, John C. Reilly, Jack Black, and Martin Starr. The only person not there is Paul Rudd… what the hell, Paul Rudd? You too good for the Beastie Boys? Any who… They lip sync a track and it’s just a good time all around. Then they meet future versions of the same personas and they end having some sort of dance off. Then things get ugly and the cops come. The cops weren’t just played by anyone. The cops… of all characters… were the Beasties themselves. My only complaint is that it wasn’t the “Sabbotage” cops who did the busting. I would have assumed this was a Spike Jonze project, but no. Adam Yauch actually wrote and directed this beast himself. The style was gritty, static, and in your face. Very well done. If you’re a fan of the Beasties then you’re going to love the hell out of this. If you’re a fan of comedy then you’re going to love the hell out of this. If you have ANY taste at all… you guessed it… you’re going to love the hell out of this.
