They don’t build stages like they used to.
About a week or so ago, a stage collapsed at the Indiana State Fair while Sugarland was getting ready to perform. Dozens and dozens were hurt and at this point, six people died. There is the unreal footage online. It looks like a building that’s been imploded. They were lucky more people didn’t get caught in its way. It’s a horrible situation. With any horrible situation, come horrible jokes. As horrible as it is and as much as I wish people the best I had no choice but to slightly laugh at the joke “See! God hates country!” It happened AGAIN the other day. This time, more fatalities and around 70 or so people were injured when a stage collapsed in Belgium. This time it was the Pukkelpop Festival. They had a big line up, but the show is pretty much cancelled. Foo Fighters aren’t playing. A few weeks ago, it happened in Tulsa at a Flaming Lips show. In mid-July, it happened at a Cheap Trick concert in Ottawa. It was the Bluesfest, the song was “I Want You To Want Me” and then boom! Down goes the stage. No one was seriously hurt that time, but it was still a pretty scary situation.
I don’t get it. What’s so different about this summer than any summer before it? Why are so many concert stages collapsing this summer? Is it Global Warming? Is it the economy? Is it the terrorists? What? Seriously. I don’t get why. I’ve gone to many concerts in my life and have never seen anything close to something like this. I’ve seen crowds near riot, I’ve seen some brutal mosh pits, I’ve seen equipment and systems blow out, I’ve seen all the normal concert things as everyone else. Thankfully, I’ve never seen a stage come close to collapsing.
