Survivor Series 2011 Review
11/22/11
BY MIKEY MIGO

I was looking forward to Survivor Series more so than normal this year. I’ve not enjoyed RAW all that much in the past few weeks, but seeing Dolph Ziggler and Cody Rhodes right on the cusps of them moving up is reason enough. Then to see Mark Henry get his well deserved push and not only take the ball, but run with it like a mofo. The dude is having the best “big man” World Title reign since the likes of Yokozuna. I mean that in a really complimentary way. I’ve been a fan of Henry for years and it’s awesome to be able to see this go on. Meanwhile, Randy Orton is working at his peak right now. He’s making people around him look great, is consistently putting on entertaining matches, and is really into his own. If John Cena is today’s Hulk Hogan then Orton is today’s Randy Savage. Dig it!

Despite these things, the flow of the shows and something about it just feels flat. I don’t know if it’s the writing, the current feuds, the announcing, or what. It’s just not as fun as it was even two or so months ago. A good PPV can change that…

I’ve loved Dolph’s US Title reign, but if losing to John Morrison meant that John Morrison would still be in WWE come Royal Rumble then I’d be all for it. I’m a big fan of Morrison, but Dolph is a machine lately. He’s not only going to be a main eventer, but he’ll be a Hall of Famer. I’m putting A LOT of stock in him and he looks like he deserves it. Next was Beth Phoenix killing Eve in a solid match. The top rope finish was hot. Beth is the most bad ass diva of all time. Confirmed! Then was the best promo I’ve seen in a LONG time. The Rock’s promo was seriously the best face promo I can remember in recent history. It didn’t have to “shoot” or “break the fourth wall”. It was all emotion and electricity. Amazing stuff and worth viewing alone. I enjoyed the “Traditional Survivor Series” Match. The Sin Cara botchery just about ruined the flow of the match, but they brought it back strong. They really utilized this match to get over all the right people. Cody Rhodes and Wade Barrett being the survivors works for me. Big Show and Mark Henry was fun and did what it should have. There were moments it was boring, but overall they carried themselves well for the very loud and opinioned MSG crowd. Big Show got his revenge and Mark kept his title. But now is Mark hurt? Who knows? I can already hear the tears of the internet crying over the fact that Daniel Bryan didn’t cash in. Get over it. There IS a plan. And that elbow drop? C’mon! Good stuff. Then Punk beat Alberto in a pretty boring match. He’s the champ again… okie doke. Whatever. Does that mean we get a Kevin Nash/Punk match for the TITLE now? Blah. Then we close with Cena and Rock beating Awesome Truth. It was fun and the crowd loved it, but it didn’t really do much for me. Rock gave Cena a Rock Bottom, but it still felt a little anticlimactic.

Overall, the show was lack luster. There were some big moments like The Rock promo, Big Show elbow drop, Beth’s top rope murder, Punk winning, the Cody! Cody! Chants, and the big rock bottom. Still, as a three hour pay per view it wasn’t what I’d call great. I’d grade the show with a solid C. The moments WERE cool, but nothing makes me want to rededicate any time to rewatch.
