My Neutered States of America

I know sports aren’t like they used to be. If you breathe on the wrong player in basketball or a quarterback in football then a ref will call you on it. You can’t REALLY tackle players anymore in football. Pitchers don’t seem to throw as hard and as long. You can even chair shot someone or even SEE the sight of blood in the WWE anymore. I get all of this. I understand the reasons for it. It protects the million dollar performers from not being able to make big plays in between the abundance of commercials.

It’s everything. You can’t “bully” someone anymore. From what I gather being a “bully” isn’t just the one or two really dumb brutish types picking on “nerds” anymore. It’s not the Alphas Betas being assholes to the Tri-Lams. It’s not just Robert Downey Jr. and the other guy in Weird Science. It’s not just Nelson from The Simpsons. The stereotype of the traditional “bully” has passed. In 2011, the term “bully” basically means “You’re mean! I don’t like what you’re saying! Don’t Do That!” There are levels to this that need to be rectified. Being racist or mocking someone for being gay or lesbian or straight is one thing. That stuff is NEVER good. But a jocky type can’t pick on “four eyes” anymore? What the hell happened?

It’s good for society because at the root of all this “anti-bullying” stuff is basically a pro-gay agenda. I’m all for people being themselves, but this recent “anti-bullying” campaign reeks of propaganda. Just because it’s propaganda I’m okay with, doesn’t mean it’s not. If other kids gain some peace of mind from it, awesome. I just have a hard time not accepting it’s not that. Regardless, it’s not a bad cause at all. It’s just society is becoming REALLY soft. Sports tamed down the rules, bullies are being rallied against, and music’s rebellious roots are being cut off. In ten or so years when these kids who haven’t known anything other than this peaceful and SUPER PC world what is going to happen? What is going to happen to the arts? Without overcoming and struggle what will people of substance sing about? There is no voice, there is no fist, and there is no anger. I feel like I’m one of those “back in my day” guys, but I’m only 28. I was out of school when the towers fell, I was in school when Columbine happened, and I think less than a quarter of my class had a cell phone upon graduating. In the ten or so years I’ve been out of high school, the entire world has changed. I know I have. It’s just sad to think that we as a whole are losing our balls. Want proof? We saw two American sport leagues go on strike over not getting enough millions to play an easier game. Watch TV for like an hour and you’ll see hundreds of hours dedicated to anti-bullying. To top it off, in 2012 we’ll see Madonna perform at the half time show of the SUPER BOWL. Madonna… the… “Material Girl”.
