WWE Summerslam 2012 Review
08.21.12
BY MIKEY MIGO

I had nothing invested in seeing this Pay Per View. The match build up and the big storylines just aren’t for me. I was never a Brock Lesnar fan to begin with so this return is interesting at best for me. Triple H has become a succubus. It still blows my mind that a storyline involving Paul Heyman and Shawn Michaels cutting promos bores the hell out of me. Punk/Cena/Big Show didn’t make me want to run out to the hills with excitement. I wanted to see Dolph and Jericho. Other than that, it’s a whole lot of lackluster. Still, just because of my disinterest doesn’t mean I’m not going to sit down with an open mind and be optimistic.

The show wasn’t horrible at all. Jericho and Dolph had a great opening match. It set the bar for the rest of the night. Jericho is one of the greatest of all time. This match proved it. His energy and his way of mixing it up and pulling out pretty much a whole new move set as a face is remarkable. Dolph is hitting all strides and is on his way. Over the past few months he has been the main reason for me watching. The pairing of these two was perfect. This match wasn’t a high card feud, but the action and story told was better than anything else on the show. The second best match was a sleeper. The Miz and Rey had a really solid Intercontinental Title match. The Miz seems to be ready to relaunch himself into the stars. Of course the main event was more of a spectacle than a match.

The rest of the show was hit or miss. While I liked the end of the Daniel Bryan/Kane match, the match didn’t work for me. I just didn’t seem like it meshed. The Tag Title Match sucked too. I like R-Truth and I think Kofi has untapped potential, but I don’t like them together. This was the bathroom break for sure. Sheamus and Alberto had a strong finish, but the match was boring. The Triple Threat Match was my least favorite match. I’m not a fan of anyone involved and the storyline attached is just crap. I don’t even want to talk about it or try to analyze it.

The main event was okay. I appreciated the fact they sold Brock’s stomach problems, but Triple H looked WAY too strong. Why the hell does Triple H not sell anyone’s moves anymore until the end? He bounces back from every spot until the end. It’s a formula now. It’s brawl, brawl, brawl, look like you’re dying for a minute, brawl, table, oversell, no sell, and then the last few minutes of the match is full of “I’m not dead yet!” near falls. In fact, that seems to the formula for every “featured match” in WWE these days. Brock should have gone over stronger. It’s just so insulting that the Rock or Brock come back when “they want” and the fans give them shit. Triple H comes back and puts himself in the main event. I don’t care what the legacy is, it’s bad business. Triple H and Undertaker are the old timer wrestlers that people cheer and support more out of long time habit and not based on anything they’ve done of merit in the past few years. Well, except for maybe one big match a year. Then Brock wins and Triple H STILL gets the last few minutes of camera time just for himself. I’m not a Triple H “hater”. I respect and appreciate his value to the company. He has provided many hours of great entertainment. For years I’d be annoyed by all the dumb kids saying “He’s only champ because he’s married to the boss’s daughter! He sucks!” I never felt that way. I always felt he deserved it because he was obviously 100% dedicated to WWE. While this still might be true backstage, it doesn’t translate to the viewing audience. It just feels forced.
