"Going The Distance"

BY MIKEY MIGO

It’s been awhile since a romantic comedy actually looked cool. This movie didn’t look all that cool. For me Drew Barrymore is hit or miss. I think she’s awesome and she’s hot. She has been part of some of my favorite movies, but at the same time she has done some romantic comedies that were a little to PG-Soccer mom for my liking. Justin Long is another person I’m iffy on. I went for a long time not liking him at all, but over the past year or two I’ve taken a mild appreciation for the guy. He seems cool and all, but some of his movies just don’t work for me. So basically, I was on the fence. The only real saving grace for me was knowing that Jason Sudeikis and “Always Sunny In Philadelphia” mad man Charlie Day. That was enough to get me over the hump to watch this movie and give it a chance. I did it. I went into it and watched it with an optimistic and open mind. What happened was my low expectations being met and exceeded beyond imaginable. I really liked this movie. The movie follows Drew and Justin in their own early 30’s-wildsome lives. They hook up, kick it off, and fall in love. She then has to move far away, so they are forced into a long distance relationship. It covers the struggles of that and all the normal stuff, but it’s just better than the normal movies that do this. It’s realistically vulgar, it has casual weed smoking, and is really unhinged from any stereotypical romantic comedy. Everyone knows that the two leads did in fact have a relationship for awhile and their chemistry is very apparent. Christina Applegate also shines with her weird “dry humping” fetish. A lot of the movie catches you off guard. I think we’ve been groomed to accept shticky romantic comedies for so long that when something like this, especially starring Drew Barrymore and Justin Long, comes out our minds are blown. This is easily the best Kevin Smith movie he never wrote. B+
