"The Romantics"

Sometimes little limited release movies end up being way better than the big blockbusters. In this case, the quiet little movie called “The Romantics” fits that bill. Before I jump in to the plot and the heart of things, I’ll go over the cast of this independent drama. We have Anna Paquin, Katie Holmes, Dianna Argron, Malin Akerman, Josh Duhamel, Adam Brody, Elijah Wood, and Candice Bergen. All of those people really are in this movie. It’s about seven college friends who reunite six years after school for the wedding of Paquin and Duhamel. From here, we’re slowly stripped away and shown a bare story of these people’s history. Duhamel and Holmes, the maid of honor, used to be involved and being together again sparks that old chemistry. It builds and builds and more back story is revealed throughout. It sounds tedious and at sometimes is, but it’s done right. The supporting characters support the main plotline well. You forget how good of an actress Katie Holmes can be. Josh Duhamel isn’t totally annoying. Anna Paquin plays a very different role and shows why she’s more than just the girl from the vampire show. The movie is simple. It’s a big house in the woods. Nothing else. The location is there, but the actors doing their thing is the real scenery. It almost comes off as a play. Actors and actresses talk about wanting to get juicy dramatic roles to show off what they can do. This is one of those movies. It’s not great and it does drag at points, but it’s worth watching for the performances. B-
