"Uncertainty"

BY MIKEY MIGO

Some movies sound way more interesting by the synopsis than they actually turn out to be on screen. I hadn’t even heard of this movie until I got my hands on it. It’s an indie drama starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Lynn Collins written and directed by the duo of Scott McGehee and David Siegel. It’s about a couple making a big decision about their lives. The way it’s presented is two potential stories. One is the couple visiting her family and is character driven drama. The other side is an action packed chase thriller. I like Joseph Gordon-Levitt as much as the next person. I dig the roles he takes on and have for a while. Most folk, mainly girls, look at him with a sense of blindness. He can “do no wrong” and is uber-“dreamer”. Whatever. He’s good, but he still has a ways to go to be “great”. I’m sure even he’d agree with that. I feel like I have to bring this up because this movie SUCKED HARD. Lynn Collins is attractive and did a great job. I enjoyed the chemistry of the two leads and I liked how the movie looked… at times. I’m also a big indie fan so I can accept and embrace the “shaky cam” style, but this looked like “Cloverfield” with a budget at times. While at first you’re thinking “this could be really interesting and good”, it quickly changes into “where is this going?” and “is it done YET?” The character driven half of the movie was drab and didn’t do anything to make the characters likeable. The action part starts with a lot of potential and could have been its own project with some more depth. This movie attempts to have a message, but it really doesn’t. I have a feeling that they cut this movie down A LOT and had a lot of stuff left out. Probably more interesting stuff than what we were left with. Some movies are just insulting. “Uncertainty” was insulting because it tried to make you think the movie was artsy or super deep. I’m not trying to be a dick about it. I like everyone involved and McGehee and Siegel put out an honest and respectable effort, but the flick put me to sleep. Three times. Maybe this movie was all a dream, or rather a nightmare. I’d rather not rewatch it to find out. D+
