"Half Baked"
04/16/12
BY MIKEY MIGO

Half Baked is older than some moms out there. It came out in 1998, but it’s still one of those movies that’s timeless and still gets talked about fondly today. Over the years we’ve heard a lot of backstories and experiences from the movie and subsequent success of Dave Chappelle, Neal Brennan, Guillermo Diaz, Jim Breuer, and Harland Williams. The movie holds up. I reintroduced myself to it recently and it was just as funny as it was when I was 14. Now as an adult, who can relate the slacker characters, it’s like watching a whole new movie. I always understood the inuendos, but it wasn’t from experience. Basically what I’m saying is that I didn’t smoke weed when I was a kid and now I have. The story of this movie seems so casual and simple, but there are tons of gags and laughs in this movie. It’s the little stoner details in the movie that’s captured in only a way that these guys could do it. I’ve seen the “giggle and munchy” stoner stereotypes. It CAN be true, but there’s a bit more silliness and experience to laugh at than that. The one-liners are still hilarious and the cameos are still awesome. The movie proves that as much as things change around us, weed smoking is still pretty damn timeless. Dave and co-writer Neal Brennan would go on to make history with Chappelle’s Show. The show was amazing, but ended in drama and controversy. I’m hereby suggesting they do another movie. Take control, shoot something hilarious in the tone that only that collaboration can produce, and fill that comedy void that’s been there since the show ended. Would a a “Half-Baked 2” be that horrible? I think not. If you haven’t seen “Half Baked” and enjoy weed humor and just good comedy in general then you should have not only seen this movie already but own it on VHS. B+
