"The Three Stooges"

I really wanted to see this movie when it was first announced. I won’t even say who they originally had in mind for the cast because it’s sad to think about. The three actors they had in line would have made this movie an A-List blockbuster. Those plans fell apart and the result was this movie. We have Chris Diamantopoulos as “Moe”, Sean Hayes as “Larry”, and Will Sasso as “Curly”. Sasso was a great Curly and the other two were passable. The movie starts off with kid versions of the three. I almost could have enjoyed a movie focused on them more than this one. The kid who did Larry had the mannerisms and essence of “Larry Fine” down WAY more than Sean Hayes did. I like how this movie was structured. They broke it up into three stories/acts. It gave that “short film” vibe we’re used to. The stories all tied to one big plot so it worked out nicely. The first story involves them being kids and growing up in an Orphanage. The second act sees the trio hired in some shady criminal stuff. The third sees everyone making up and things all working out for the best. I appreciate this movie. Larry David as “Sister Mary-Mengele” was great. Jane Lynch, Sofia Vergara, Brian Doyle-Murray, and other made good too. It was cheesy and hokey. It reminded me of the relaunch of The Muppets, but less engaging and endearing. There is a lot of camera time devoted to Jersey Shore, which is NEVER good. The Jersey Shore connection, the weaker cast, and pacing bothered me. I understood the structuring, but the story got boring and predictable. The old school Stooges had some of the predictable things too, but they had a certain wit and charm that this movie lacked. I think it’s the chemistry, but I’m not sure. I just didn’t connect to this movie and was annoyed or bored by it more often than even mildly amused. If you want to see it, go for it. Just take haste, lower your expectations as much as possible. Even then, you’ll be bored. D+
