"Dark Shadows"

BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER

I had to force myself to watch this movie. It’s like Tim Burton is on creative cruise control, but at least the kids at the Hot Topic clothing store will buy the swag. Burton’s visual eye and storytelling can and has been nothing short of great. I can list off his filmography, but odds are you love more than one of his movies. That ended and he just started cranking out the same looking movies with very little heart if any. It’s just hard to connect to these movies. He keeps working with Johnny Depp. They work well together, but at this point I’m tired of this collaboration. Nothing new is coming from it. How many pseudo-goth costumes is he going to wear? Depps stars as a vampire who is woken up from a long “rest” and meets his snobbish living family. There is some other side plots, but nothing really entertaining. I know this is based off the old television series. This is not the same thing. The show had a certain spirit to it that this movie misses. The supporting cast is made up of all-star performers. We got to see Michelle Pfieffer, Helena Bonham Carter, Jackie Earle Haley, Jonny Lee Miller, and Eva Green. I’m fairly certain my favorite performance of the movie was from Chloe Grace Moretz. Her attitude and character had the most consistency and had some good lines. That was about it. Sadly, I don’t have anything really to ramble about. It came and went. This movie was pretty lackluster. I didn’t expect too much and I still overshot my expectations. I know its fun to crap on Tim Burton these days. It’s easy to point out that his movies don’t feel nearly as inspired as his awesome early work. I’ve made those remarks myself. It sucks when things like this are proven right. I not only don’t want to see this movie again, but I’ll probably avoid it whenever it hits TV. It was THAT draining. Outside of a very few bright spots, you can skip this one. It’s not the worst movie ever, but it’s just a waste of time. Go watch “PeeWee’s Big Adventure”. C-
