"Neighbors"
07.23.14
BY MICHAEL GOODPASTER

I am a big fan of the movies Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg. Rogen is one of the most likeable people in movies right now. He’s just entertaining and fun to watch. Then we add in the fact that Nicholas Stoller is an awesome director. He’s been involved with a few of the best and most underrated comedies of the past few years. There is no reason for “Neighbors” to not be a fun movie. The problem is that I just didn’t want to see it. The trailers and premise is bothersome. Maybe I’m just getting old and lame. The idea of a youngish married couple with a baby getting terrorized by a bunch of jocky college douche bags is not my idea of fun. It’s like “Revenge of the Nerds”, but the “nerds” are the youngish married couple. I’ve lost touch with what’s “cool”. I’m not a fan of skinny jeans, modern hip hop, or the stuff the 25 and younger couple are into. It seems uninspired and fully artificial. I just don’t see the substance in it. Maybe that’s me being an old guy or maybe it’s because it’s just lame stuff. When I see the trailer it makes me uncomfortable and annoyed. I see the gags in the trailer and just want to punch the frat guys. I don’t want to watch it and laugh. I don’t want to watch it for two hours and wait for the married couple to get their revenge on the frat or even worse become friends at the end. I just wanted to avoid the movie. I did just that for as long as possible. I finally caved in because, like I said at the beginning, I’m a fan of Rogen, Goldberg, and Stoller. I caved in and watched the movie. It turned out to be exactly what I expected. The “best parts” were mostly the stuff in the trailers. It was a raunchy comedy where douchey frat boys terrorized a married couple with a newborn baby and in the end exactly what you expect happens. It wasn’t “bad” or anything, but it just wasn’t fun. I can imagine younger people liking it, but it was just pretty tedious for me to get through. The gags are amusing, but the trailers gave everything away. I like the cast, the producers, and the director. I just didn’t get into the movie. Seth Rogen, Zac Efron, Rose Byrne, Dave Franco, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse are awesome. This movie was not for me so I can’t really recommend it. There is better stuff to watch from everyone involved. Watch “Knocked Up”, “Forgetting Sarah Marshall”, “Get Him to The Greek”, “Superbad”, “Pineapple Express”, etc. Go with that stuff. “Neighbors” was just not that interesting. Then again this movie is now Seth Rogen’s highest grossing movie so what do I know? C+
