[MUSIC] THE SAVAGE ANIMAL
"The Music of the 2011 Oscars"
02.23.11
BY MIKEY MIGO

It is not uncommon for someone who makes movies or is in the film industry to have a history or an experience or two within the music world. Since the invention of film and even more so later once the music video was created the mediums were crossed.

Elvis made music and made movies. Beatles made music and made movies. Van Halen made music and great videos. From Dick Clark countdown shows to MTV to YouTube to iphones the world of mingling the music and the film has evolved with the world. It's crazy if you think about how far things have came in the past few decades. We're living in a golden era of communications and technology. With the help of the internet I was able to specific my thoughts and research and dig deep into the backgrounds and careers of some of the nominees for the 2011 Oscars.

There is a lot more ties to music than you'd imagine…

THE SOCIAL NETWORK
Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross
(Original Score)
They best score, soundtrack, and screw it… the best album of 2010 was easily the soundtrack done here by Nine Inch Nail's Trent Reznor and production partner Atticus Ross. It already won the Golden Globe and I'd be really surprised if he didn't get the Oscar as well. With Reznor recently saying NIN was going to be on a live hiatus this is a perfect creative avenue for Reznor. In fact, it's been announced that Reznor and director David Fincher will be working together yet again, time time for the score of his next movie, "The Girls with the Dragon Tattoo". Expect Reznor and Ross in the same position next year when that's released.

David Fincher
(Director)
Fincher is famous for movies like Fight Club, Benjamin Buttons, Zodiac, and this new masterpiece in the Social Network but the dude has been cranking out great music videos now for years. He has done videos with Michael Jackson, The Rolling Stones, Nine Inch Nails, A Perfect Circle, Paula Abdul, Billy Idol, Madonna, and a slew of others. It's not like he left music videos for movies completely either. His most recent video was Nine Inch Nail's "Only".

Justin Timberlake
(Actor)
The dude should have gotten a Best Supporting Actor nomination. His performance in Social Network was great. He keeps improving with each acting performance he unleashes. But we can't forget where the man's bread is buttered. He is always going to be that curly haired boy band kid from NSync and the dude who brought "SexyBack". He seems way more focused on acting right now, but it'd be pretty surprising if he didn't get back into a studio before too long. If Will Smith can do it…

BLACK SWAN
Natalie Portman
(Actress)
She has been in some great movies and is securing her place as one of the new "it girls" of Hollywood. She's A-List as they come, but she did have some cross over time in the past. She was in a 2007 Michel Gondry directed music video for Paul McCartney's "Dance Tonight". In a 2002 interview she cited Moby as one of her closest friends. Most of all, she's a bad ass gangsta rapper. If you've not seen the "Natalie Rap" SNL Digital Short, you're missing out on something so awesome words cannot describe it. She is awesome.

Clint Mansell
(Original Score)
From the British electro-dustrial band "Pop Will Eat Itself" and tons of notable production work, Mansell has carved a niche for himself with doing scores. He has worked with Darren Aronofsky on his other movies, but has also done Doom, Smokin' Aces, Moon, and a few others. Commercials, other movies, and pretty much anywhere music is playing in the background has snatched up his work. I'm almost willing to guarantee you've heard more of his work than you realize.

Matthew Libatique
(Cinematographer)
The cinematography for "Black Swan" is so amazing that it's hard to imagine the same dude did two Jay-Z videos. It's not just Jay-Z, but also Incubus, Moby, Matchbox 20, and others. I have an urge to go back and watch more of these videos to absorb how great this guy is at what he does.

THE FIGHTER
Mark Wahlberg
(Actor/Producer)
Marky Mark in the house! He's long past his days in music, but to ignore them would be criminal. Marky Mark was the East Coast answer to Vanilla Ice and fun to reflect on and laugh. It's also a good story of someone having a ridiculous start and then managing to become one of the most respected people in Hollywood. Nothing but "Good Vibrations" from me.

Christian Bale
(Actor)
In 1992, Christian Bale starred in a Disney musical called "Newsies". No one brings that shit up. Probably for a reason too.

Amy Adams
(Actress)
I doubt many people forgot about the 2007 Disney musical "Enchanted". The movie was nominated for tons of awards, made a lot of money, and put her on the map. In it she showed off her old musical theatre background and did a beautiful job.

THE KIDS ARE ALRIGHT
The title of this movie is the title of a song by "The Who".

THE TOWN
Jeremy Renner
(Actor)
He's a rugged and tough dude, but he does have a musical side. He has performed in movies mostly. He sung in North Country, Love Comes to the Executioner, The Assassination of Jesse James, and others. The thing that gets me is the fact that he's in the 2003 music video for "Trouble" by Pink. I kind of wish I were kidding.

Who else from this year's Oscars has a music related backstory?
