[MUSIC] THE SAVAGE ANIMAL
"Back To School Albums 2011"

BY MIKEY MIGO

In the film industry they’ll save their big ones for the summer blockbuster season or closer to the end of the year for the Oscar bait. In television they seem to save the new season premieres for the fall, even though cable has all but destroyed this old formula. The point here is that timing is everything and there are certain trends that are a constant.

I think one of the more underrated constants is the back to school fall music release. Maybe it’s just me, but it seems that over the years a lot of great albums have come out in the third or fourth quarter of the year. Is it because most bands are back from their summer tours and festival dates? Is it just normal business? Whatever. All I know is that every year around this time the album releases seem to be stronger.

This year is no different.

Tech N9ne has a few releases coming out, which seems to be a very common occurrence over the past few years. Nas has something new coming before the year is up. There’s that Drake album that’ll flop hard. Redman is on his way with “Muddy Waters 2”. Yelawolf is going to finally drop “Radioactive” in late October. In November we have Common, Talib Kweli, Busta Rhymes, and a slew of others.

Rock music has been on the stagnant side over the past few years but there are some pretty interesting releases on the horizon. For the old school rockers we have Alice Cooper, Anthrax, Dream Theater, and others. For the grunge era folks we have Bush, Tori Amos, Jane’s Addiction, and more. The late 90’s gives us new releases from Blink-182, Korn, and more. Then if you want to get your douche-bag on, you can rock out to new music from Coldplay, Wilco, or Staind. There is something for everyone. Remember New Found Glory? Even New Found Glory has a new album coming out!

There’s all that, plus these five releases that I’m personally looking forward to the most…

THE ARTIST: Florence and the Machine
THE ALBUM: TBA

The debut album was a huge hit. Well, at least the “Dog Days Are Over” song was a huge hit. They played all the big shows and got tons of attention and acclaim. Rightfully so. Have you heard the album? It’s one of the better debuts in the past few years. Why wouldn’t we want to hear the follow up? There is a chance they’ll drift away and not put out another big hit, but there is too much potential not to be excited or at least holding some form of anticipation.

THE ARTIST: Lou Reed and Metallica
THE ALBUM: Lulu

What the hell is this? This is a collab album. First we have Lou Reed, the pretentious douchey dude from The Velvet Underground. With him is one of the biggest rock bands of all time and the destroyer of Napster, Metallica. I dunno what’s worse. The jerk in the Warhol banana shirt or the grunt in the sleeveless “Kill Em’ All” shirt. Yikes. That said, I do in fact enjoy a good portion of the Velvet Underground greatest hits album and Metallica was the shit back in the day. I’m an optimist so I’m always hopeful that something will be good. The combination of these two forces is in the least going to be a really interesting listen.

THE ARTIST: Pearl Jam
THE ALBUM: Twenty

I’ve never been a huge Pearl Jam fan. I’m a fan, but I’m not one of those crazy ones. I think I bought only one Pearl Jam cd in my entire life. I typically enjoy the singles when I hear then on the radio or television. They’re just not a band that I’ve ever fully indulged into. Still, I appreciate their work. This album is technically a soundtrack for a twenty year anniversary documentary directed by Cameron Crowe. I’ve always been told how amazing Pearl Jam is live and how they put on the best shows. I hope this covers that aspect. It’s like a greatest hits album, but with a lot more pizzazz and substance. I’m not a huge fan, like I said, but I might pick this one up if it covers the majority of the songs I’m already a fan of. “Do the Evolution” would guarantee it.

THE ARTIST: Kasabian
THE ALBUM: Velociraptor!

Kasabian is one of those indie rock bands that normal people should know about. You know what I mean. The non-hipster flannel and VANS wearing crowd. Of course those people are going to love Kasabian. They’ve been a fan since they were in grade school and doing things you still haven’t heard about. THOSE people. Kasabian is awesome. Their last album was one of the best rock albums I’ve heard in awhile and I’m pretty sure they’re hitting their full stride right now. If you’ve not listened to Kasabian, go do so…

THE ARTIST: Primus
THE ALBUM: Green Naugahyde

Finally. It’s been way too long since we’ve gotten a Primus album. In fact, the last studio album from Primus was 1999’s “Antipop”. They did put out an EP in 2003, but finally, a new full length. A few tracks are out there, but this still has to be one of the more anticipated rock releases in awhile. Les Claypool said the album reminds him of the stuff from “Frizzle Fry”. Original drummer Jay Lane is back so that’s another reason for the more “retro” sound. Then again, it’s Primus so it’s going to sound “retro” to begin with. I took a listen to Primus’ discography not too long ago and I enjoyed what I heard. Les Claypool is a genius and I can’t wait to hear what’s on this one.

What upcoming albums are YOU looking forward to the most?
