"Money-Money! Yeah-Yeah!"
04.15.09
BY MIKEY MIGO

It's time to pay the piper and the piper is the US government. A lot of people I know actually get money back on their taxes, but it's still a stressful time. You look at your tax stubs and cringe that you only made X amount of dollars and have nothing really to show for it. You're still in crazy debt and odds are you'll have to use your refund check to catch back up. Maybe you're going to use the cash to splurge on a treat for yourself or go on a small vacation.

It's interesting to think about the concept of "money". Pieces of paper with dead presidents on them are what make this world go round. We need it to survive, to eat, to have a roof over our heads, and to gain access to the things we want and desire. The older you are you more you realize that the Wu Tang Clan was right.

"Cash Rules Everything Around Me. CREAM. Dolla-Dolla Bill, ya'll."

There are literally a trillion songs out there about currency. To attempt to make a list of them would take us way more time than we have this week. Today I'm going to dig deep into my brain and pick out my favorite songs with the word "money" in the title. So off the bat, "CREAM" by Wu Tang is eliminated. "Head Like a Hole" by Nine Inch Nails; gone. The word "money" HAS to be in the title. This simplifies the list and makes me have to think just THAT much more.

First some honorable mentions. I know I'll miss some and probably some painfully obvious ones, but it's all subjective and up for discussion. These are just the ones from the top of my head. Ones that didn't make the list include "Money" by Mindless Self Indulgence, "Got Money" by Lil Wayne, and "I'm Getting Money" by Tupac to name a few.

#7) "It's All About The Money" by WWF (Ted DiBiase theme) That's right, I'm going with the Million Dollar Man entrance theme over Lil Wayne. Growing up a wrestling fan it was a rule of thumb to know each and everything entrance song and be able to sing it on demand. This one was easy.

#6) "She Works Hard For The Money" by Donna Summer
I had to research to find out who sang this song and was surprised by the answer. This is 80's montage music if there ever was such a thing. This is video is from the 84 Grammys and it reeks of 80's cheese and fun. I'm honestly surprised a current pop diva hasn't covered this yet or at least sampled it's beat. If you've actually clicked the link and made it longer than two minutes, maybe you can explain the basketball/slam dunk stuff. I'm lost.

#5) "Money(That's What I Want)" by The Flying Lizards
This song was originally by Barret Strong and then covered by the likes of The Beatles and others. I am going with this 80's version because it's what I'm the most used to and what I like the most. It's just a bizarre cover with a very weird musical edge to it. The vocalist plays it as spacey and unimpressed as she basically just talks through the song. If you're annoyed by this then blame the movies "Empire Records" and "Wedding Singer" for putting this in my brain.

#4) "Mo' Money Mo' Problems" by Notorious BIG
I have plenty of problems right now with no money so I couldn't imagine having this dilema. If I had 90's "Bad Boy" money I'd be still living a very happy and comfortable life. Still, the perspective of this one is that the more money you have the more problems you'll have. This was a postmortem Biggie video that got a looot of attention. Puff Daddy (that was P-Diddy/Diddy/Sean Combs's name at the time) and Ma$e(yep, the dollar sign). This was really one of the best eras in music. Hip Hop was relevant as Pac, Biggie, Wu, and others were holding it down as guys like Jay Z, Nas, and Busta Bust were making their waves on the way up. Sure the "money/hoes/killing" stuff was around, but things were real then. Hip Hop has declined to a Limp Bizkit level of artificial edge and it's depressing. It takes about 3 and half minutes of Biggie's verse, but it's worth the wait.

#3) "For the Love of Money" by The O'Jays
This song makes me want to strut down a busy street and point at people. I had trouble finding a good video of the group performing this hit so please bear with the video and enjoy the audio. I think I might have picked this simply because the riff at the beginning is great and I love the dirty soul vibe going in this 1973 classic.

#2) "Money For Nothing" by Dire Straits
I was very close to making this song numero uno. It's just a kick ass song, kick ass guitar riff, and a very kick ass video. I'm not a huge Dire Straits fan by any means, but this song is gold. I enjoy the angst behind the lyrics. I appreciate the fact that the song is basically a shot at celebrity in music while not being a gimmick in itself.

#1) "Money" by Pink Floyd
Of course this would be number one. It's not only the best song to have the word "Money" in its title, but it's also one of the best songs of ALL TIME. If you don't agree, do fact check and find out that it's a fact that you're ears are broken. This video is from the Pulse concert in 94, 21 years after the initial release of "The Dark side of the Moon". This song is THIRTY SIX YEARS old and is still better than most of the new stuff out there today. There have been plenty of good and even great trippy and experimental rock bands to come and go over that time, but Pink Floyd is still the measuring stick of "whoa".

Surely I left some out. What are your favorite songs with the word MONEY in the title?
