MIGO's TAKE

This was from way back in January of 2002. We had just started in the August before this and had a few shows, a lot of drama, and some good times mixed in by this point. At the show before, which was less than two weeks before this one we saw somewhat of a “changing of the guard” as Machine was crowned the MEW World Enterprise Champion, Criminal Rage won the North American Title, and in a very crazy and bloody match we saw Tank Escobar defeat the likes of Brawn The Lumberjack, Eddie Jacobs, Wendell Sunshine, and more to become the FIRST EVER “Maniak Champion”. It was basically a Hardcore Title, but in which every match had some sort of stipulation to it. Sometimes it resulted in the title being defending in tag matches, Street Fights, or like in this case a “No Holds Barred” Match. Tank, with his valet/manager Pookie, came out to celebrate being champion but Trent Lexington came out to spoil the party and save the crowd from being mocked and bored at the same time. These two beat the hell out of each other and put on a pretty entertaining, granted sloppy as hell, match. It’s all garbage and spots, but there IS a hint of a story here. I just like the ring chemistry between Tank and Trent. They worked well together in MEW and even fought against each other on the very first show. I remember at the time being bummed out that the crowd was so small (100ish), but would soon learn that it wasn’t a bad draw at all for MEW. It’s just we were spoiled as the shows before this, especially at the VFW in Lake Station, were getting 300 to close to 500. Chase, on commentary, randomly getting the crowd to cheer just by saying “and the crowd goes wild” became a mainstay in MEW with just about everyone to ever do commentary using it at least once or twice when needed. As the match does on you realize it’s pretty much a cluster-f**k, but it’s still entertaining in a train-wreck kind of way. People can rightfully rip this match and these shows apart, but either way people would have plenty to talk about afterwards.
